Frequently asked questions
How do I choose a collection agency for my business?
Look for an agency that specializes in your debt type (commercial vs. consumer vs. medical), is licensed and bonded where required, works on contingency, offers transparent reporting, and has a clean complaint history. A matching service can shortlist agencies that fit your accounts.
How much do collection agencies charge?
Most agencies work on contingency, typically keeping a percentage of what they recover — commonly in the range of roughly 20% to 50%, depending on debt age, balance size and volume. Older and smaller debts usually carry higher rates. You pay nothing if nothing is collected under a pure contingency agreement.
When should I send an unpaid invoice to collections?
Many businesses place accounts at 90 days past due, or sooner if the debtor stops responding. Recovery rates generally decline as debt ages, so acting early tends to help.
Should I use a collection agency or a collection attorney?
Agencies are usually the first step for demand letters, calls and negotiation. Collection attorneys are needed to file suit, obtain a judgment, or enforce one through garnishment or liens. Larger or disputed balances often go straight to an attorney.
Is there a minimum debt amount?
There is no fixed minimum for our matching service, though some partners have minimums. Tell us the total balance and number of accounts and we will match you accordingly.
Are you a collection agency?
No. CollectionPlacement is a referral and matching service. We do not contact debtors or collect money; we connect creditors with independent agencies and law firms.
Can medical practices send patient balances to collections?
Yes, provided the collection partner complies with the FDCPA, HIPAA and medical-debt credit-reporting rules. We match healthcare providers with partners experienced in patient balances.
